If you’re running a customer-facing business, making sure you have a happy relationship with your clients is vital for a smooth operation. Regardless of how good your product or service is, some will inevitably need an extra bit of help from time to time, and using live chat can help you deal with them effectively.

In a nutshell, live chat enables you to provide a better level of customer support. What’s more, it can also help your visitors <ins>feel more engaged</ins> since they know you’re just a click away. In this article, we’ll get to know the excellent <ins>WP Live Chat Support</ins> plugin, how to set it up, and how to operate it. Let’s get busy!

Introducing the WP Live Chat Support Plugin

The WP Live Chat Support plugin enables you to communicate with your clients and visitors via chat, with very little setup necessary. It boasts an easy-to-use interface for both users and agents, and it even enables you to save your conversations. That way, you’ll be able to reference old chats and help users more efficiently. What’s more, it plays incredibly well with Divi, and we encountered no issues during testing.

In this article, we’ll focus on WP Live Chat Support’s free version, but there’s also a premium version available. The plugin’s free version is more than powerful enough for small to medium sites, and – in our opinion – it might not be worth upgrading until you reach the point where you need more than one agent.

Before we move on, it’s worth noting we’ve covered other WordPress live chat alternatives in the past, such as Zendesk Chat. However, we decided to go with WP Live Chat Support for this piece since it’s one of the most comprehensive options that doesn’t rely on a third-party platform.

Key Features:

Supports an unlimited number of simultaneous live chats.

Provides agents with detailed visitor information.

Records conversations for record-keeping purposes.

Offers a fully customizable live chat box.

Notifies agents whenever a user begins a conversation.

Integrates with Google Analytics.

How to Set Up the WP Live Chat Support Plugin (In 3 Simple Steps)

Most of you are probably capable of installing WordPress plugins in your sleep, so we’ll skip right over that step. However, do remember to back up your WordPress installation before diving in using a solution such as UpdraftPlus – after all, you’ll be thankful for it if the worst happens!

Step #1: Configure Your General Settings

As soon as you enable the WP Live Chat Support plugin, two things will happen: a small live chat box will appear on your website, and a new tab will be added to your WordPress dashboard. Before we play with the former, let’s explore the latter.

Click on the Live Chat tab on your dashboard, and choose the Settings option. Here, you’ll find a wide range of options for configuring the plugin. For now, we only need to focus on the General Settings tab:

Most of the options here are fairly straightforward. You can choose to disable live chat, select whether users should provide contact information (which is always a good idea), and the message your input field should include.

Other advanced settings include the option to see user details if they’re logged in, the ability to record IP addresses, and the option to play a notification when someone sends a new message. All of these options are on by default, and there’s no harm in keeping them enabled.

Most importantly, keep an eye out for the option to enable live chat on mobile devices. Smartphones are a burgeoning source of traffic nowadays, so disabling this option may hinder your customer relationships.

Finally, the plugin also enables you to track your live chat statistics using Google Analytics:

For this feature to work, your WordPress site should already be configured to work with Google Analytics. If you’re unsure how to do this, there are several methods to get you there. Pick the one you’re most comfortable with, then enable the corresponding option in the General Settings tab for WP Live Chat Support.

Step #2: Optimize Your Message Settings

Moving on, click on the Chat Box tab right below General Settings. This section includes a variety of customization settings – several of these are only available for premium users, but the basic options are still suitable.

Firstly, you can decide on the location of your live chat pop-up box. In most cases, we’d recommend that you stick to the default location (bottom right) since the others can be a bit awkward, but your mileage may vary. You can also enable an option for the box to expand automatically, which should be avoided for usability reasons:

The plugin can also be configured to display users avatars and usernames if they’re logged in, which can be useful if you need to follow up at a later date. You can also disable live chat for users who aren’t logged in. However, we’d recommend against since you want to reach as many potential clients as possible.

Finally, you can set the live chat to display timestamps on your messages, which helps with record keeping. You can then access any past conversations from the History tab, and know exactly during which time of the day they took place:

Aside from these settings, WP Live Chat Support also enables you to receive messages while offline. The process is as simple as it sounds – if you aren’t online when a customer sends a query, you’ll get a notification as soon as you return to the dashboard.

Step #3: Start Chatting With Your Customers

This plugin comes with a wealth of customization options, but not at the expense of usability. As soon as a visitor enters your site, they’ll see a small chat icon floating in the bottom right-hand corner (as long as you kept to the default location). In the example below, you can see the live chat box working on a page built using Divi:

Clicking on the icon will prompt users to enter their name and email:

Once they click on Start Chat, the plugin will notify you there’s a user waiting for your reply. If you enabled the option to play a notification sound under General Settings, be warned – it can get very loud. The plugin will also request your permission to send you browser notifications once you receive your first message.

To reply to your visitor, head to the Live Chat tab and click on the Open Chat button next to their name:

The following window will display any available information about your visitor, and enable you to talk with them for as long as you like:

Congratulations, you enabled live chat on your WordPress site!

Conclusion

Keeping your guests happy should always be a priority. <ins>Usable contact forms</ins> and <ins>thorough documentation</ins> can go a long way towards enabling users to help themselves, but both of these options lack the personal touch of live chat.

Setting up WordPress live chat is remarkably easy if you’re using a plugin such as WP Live Chat Support. In fact, it can be done in three short steps:

Install the plugin and configure your general settings.

Optimize your message settings.

Begin chatting with your customers!

Continuing education is one of the most important aspects of career development. If you don’t continuously learn about what you do, it’s very easy to get left behind. These days, podcasts are one of the easiest ways to do that. And if you’re a freelancer, podcasts are an invaluable asset — both in terms of cost and time.

Freelancer Podcasts

Whether you work at home or in an office (or a home office!), I would be willing to bet that at some point during your day, you chill out and zone in wearing headphones. You blast music, or maybe even listen to podcasts already. But I want to challenge you to not only listen to the WTFs and S-Towns out there, but also the productivity and freelancer podcasts that can give you added insight into pretty much everything you do.

1. Unemployable

Starting out our list comes the podcast with the title that each and every one of us can relate to. Brian Clark walks us through everything that we need to know to succeed when we are working on our own. From marketing to creative uses of our time, Unemployable hits at the heart of what most of us who have ever thrust off the 9-to-5 can relate to (and need to know.

2. The Tim Ferris Show

Maybe one of the most famous podcasts out there, The Tim Ferris Show runs the gamut of what self-employed freelancers want to listen to. You will hear from self-made business-people and success stories. You will get tips and hacks for what you can do to improve your own skills and up your game, and what’s best about it is that Tim doesn’t offer up a lot of one-in-a-million advice. Everyone can gain something from him and apply it to their own professional (or personal) life.

3. Smart Passive Income

Smart Passive Income grabbed my attention years ago because of its focus on, well, passive income. While there is a focus on passive income, Pat really hits on the importance of working hard to make things happen. He talks about tried-and-true methods that have worked for him in the past, and he brings on guests that have experience in a multitude of fields. Probably the most unique thing about SPI is how he shares his income and does in-depth case studies to show exactly what works and what doesn’t for people who want to emulate his tactics.

4. The Science of Social Media

I have learned a lot from this podcast. Not only do I love the product that Buffer makes, but their content is also top-notch. The Science of Social Media really gives you an insight into what’s working and what isn’t in the realm of social media marketing. Not an overly long show, most episodes come in well under half an hour, which means that you get the good stuff without any of the fluff. When you’re a freelancer, your time is valuable, so this one is a great way to get some new insights quickly and easily. Your social marketing will definitely improve.

5. Reply All

I love the internet. You love the internet. Pretty much everyone loves the internet. Which is why Reply All exists. Named after the most dreaded thing of inboxes everywhere, this podcast covers the cool stuff about the internet that we all experience and want to (or need to) learn about. From who gets caught with phishing scams to creating involuntary (or voluntary) communities around a topic or person, the topics are wide and varied, but focused on us. Of all the freelancer podcasts out there, this one should be listened to by anyone who spends their time online. That’s probably you.

6. Masters of Scale

Masters of Scale sums up what they are far better than I can. It’s almost like they’re professionals or something.

“Masters of Scale is an original podcast hosted by Reid Hoffman, Co-founder of LinkedIn and Investor at Greylock. In each episode, Reid shows how companies grow from zero to a gazillion, testing his theories with legendary leaders. Masters of Scale is the first American media program to commit to a 50-50 gender balance for guests. It won the 2018 People’s Voice Webby for Best Business Podcast.”

7. CodeNewbie

When I started freelancing, CodeNewbie was the resource I used to psyche myself up into doing it. Listening to the stories of other people who left careers and moved into tech really hit home with me. And once you dig deeper, you will find a great community on Slack and on Twitter that are full of other people who are very passionate about working in tech, learning to code and become developers, and help each other out. They even do episodes on things like how to get involved in open source projects, what good UX looks like (through the eyes of YouTube Gaming, for example), and what you need to know about working in the web dev fields right now. Go listen. It may be my personal favorite of all the freelancer podcasts I’ve listened to.

8. Happier with Gretchen Rubin

I am listing Happier here for one primary reason: this podcast gave me the best advice I’ve ever been given, and it changed the way I worked as a freelancer (and honestly, how I did stuff in my personal life). In one episode, Gretchen and her sister are talking, and I can’t remember which one said it, but they gave the advice of if you have a task that needs to be done, and it will take 1 minute or less to do it…just do it right then. It sounds simple (and it is), but it’s very hard to do.

It may be replying to an email or returning a call, or even getting up to refill your glass of water and stretch your legs or proofread a blurb before sending it off. The 60-second Rule has immensely changed how I work because it keeps tasks manageable, makes me productive, and honestly keeps my house a little cleaner (how long does it take to pick up all those clothes on the floor? Under 60 seconds, apparently.)

Happier is that kind of podcast. I think you’ll love it. I hope it makes you…happier.

9. 99% Invisible

Have you ever heard the saying that good design is ninety-nine percent invisible? Well, that’s where this podcast gets its name, so you’ll become familiar with it soon enough. While not entirely focused on web design, everyone can learn something from this show. They talk about how things work, why things work, and how we take for granted just how well-designed most of the things we use every day actually are. They have talked about flags on mailboxes and why door handles are shaped the way they are. You will become a better designer by listening to this one, and you will see the world in a whole new way each and every day. You’re welcome.

10. Business Wars

Business Wars is pretty neat. It takes a look at the behind-the-scenes goings-on of big businesses and their rivalries. As a freelancer or someone who is self-employed, you can glean a lot of good stuff from this show. While you may not be at the scale of Pepsi and Coke, there’s a kernel in there that applies to all businesses. Motivation and ambition and what separates the success stories from the failures.

11. The Good Life Project

A lot of us get into freelancing or becoming self-employed for one reason: to be (more) in control of our lives. That’s what The Good Life Project is about. It’s not a productivity podcast, and you may not necessarily get better at your job from listening to it. But you can definitely pick up some ideas on what you need to lead a happier, better life in general — and that in turn will make the freelancing go much, much better. A happy freelancer is…well, a happy freelancer. So go out and start living the good life, why don’t ya?

Wrapping Up

A list like this could go on and on and on. We really are in a golden age for podcasting, so we ought to capitalize on it. For those of you looking for freelancer podcasts, I think these will really get you started. There are oodles more out there. If you’re anything like me, you’ll start digging around for as many as you can find. So happy hunting and listening, my friends!

What are your favorite freelancer podcasts? Have any helped you in your self-employment?

Have you ever searched the web for courses about WordPress design? Courses about code are everywhere, but finding great courses about design are a little more difficult. This is partially due to the overlap between design and development. A lot of times those lines are blurred. In this article, we’ll look at 10 best WordPress design courses on the web to help you improve your web design skills.

Design focuses on the user experience and includes choosing layouts, colors, fonts, button design, interactions, etc. Of course, designers can benefit from understanding code too. Some of these courses include training for HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, or PHP.

I’ve chosen courses with excellent ratings that have been updated recently. Some of these courses are not specifically WordPress, but the principles are the same regardless of platform and they apply perfectly to any WordPress project.

Skill levels that are taught range from beginner to advanced. Some require Photoshop skills. I’ve avoided courses that focus on page builders. Those courses tend to focus on how to use the builder rather than design. I wanted courses that would work for WordPress regardless of which themes or plugins are used.

On to the courses, which are in no particular order.

1. WordPress Web Design and Advanced Theme Development

You’ll also use and Brackets. It’s self-paced and includes 10 hours of video, 2 articles, and 6 downloads.

No, that doesn’t mean that your users can only see your site when wearing a bulky headset (though, I guess they could). It means that you are giving your visitors the option to explore your site in a way that was previously impossible. Whether they interact with your content via mouse, keyboard, or something else entirely, you can show them a whole new world.

1. 360 VR Gallery WP

Let’s just start this off with a top-end premium plugin. After all, when you think about VR, you think premium. And with this one, you get what you pay for. You can scroll along panoramas with your mouse or keyboard, and best of all — it just works. Insert a shortcode into your post, and the embedded VR Gallery appears. No advanced knowledge of the Matrix required.

More Information – $20

2. PanoPress

No matter what kind of content or where you host it, PanoPress will let you embed it on your WordPress site. This VR gallery plugin makes it a cinch to let your users look around and see everything you want them to from all angles. The big thing here is that you can embed and control the VR experience of your users with externally uploaded content or files posted on your own WordPress installation. Just throw in some CSS and tweak some options, and your shortcode is ready in no time.

3. VR Views

Rather than simply display a panorama for your visitors to click around and scroll through, VR Views goes the extra mile. It lets you provide a stereoscopic 3D view for your visitors who are looking at your WordPress website through something like Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear VR, etc. You have various tweaks you can make to the plugin and embed via shortcode, which are all outlined on the plugin page and documentation. What makes this one stand out is that despite being in stereoscopic 3D, you don’t have to be techy to really get it working.

More Information – Free

4. WP VR View

Similar to some of the other entries in the post, WP VR View lets you embed Photosphere and panoramic images, as well as videos into your website. The shortcodes give you a ton of control over how the VR gallery appears, and if you don’t like doing it by shortcode, you have the option to change it under the options. Plus, despite the warning that may show up on the plugin page, the updates are consistent and works as of WP 4.9.8.

More Information – Free

5. WebVRShop

Taking a slightly different tac on VR gallery plugins, WebVRShop doesn’t show the users a scene, but a product. If you have anything listed via WooCommerce, you can have this plugin render that item in 3D for your visitors to rotate and view each and every inch of. It’s a pretty neat process, especially since the plugin only costs $25. If nothing else, it may be worth paying for just to play with for fun, even if you don’t want people taking a virtual tour of your guitar selection.

More Information – $25

6. MV 360 Tour

MV 360 Tour lets you set up different hotspots as they call them on rectangular images so that you can rotate around and give a fully circular view of them as the edges are stitched together. You can even move from one panorama to another seamlessly via the plugin. Like the other entries on the list, no coding is required to get this marvel of tech wizardry working, so just take some pics, add some hotspots, and take a tour. Additionally, they make a note on the product page that it’s Divi-compatible, so what else could you want?

More Information – $21

7. VR Gallery Beta

This one is pretty. You aren’t giving people a view of individual pictures in a gallery as 3D, you’re giving them an actual VR gallery they can access through your website via Google Cardboard, etc. Even better, you don’t have to get special photos or panos to enthrall your visitors — just use whatever images you want, and the plugin will do the rest. It’s pretty nifty.

Are You Virtually Ready?

VR is new technology. We still have a long way to go before there is true virtual reality. But right now, these WordPress VR gallery plugins will absolutely get you in on the bleeding edge. Can you think of any websites that you frequent that offer a virtual experience alongside their screened-in one? If you can, it’s a very short list, I’d bet. So make that list just a little longer and add one of these VR gallery plugins to your site.

What are your thoughts on the current state of VR and how do you think it will affect web development?

You may not think of yourself as a tour guide, but you certainly are. Every day, people come to your website, and you guide them around one way or another. You direct them with how you lay out your menus and order your sections. Your entire UI should be a funnel for your visitors to go from visitor to customer or subscriber. One way you can do that in a novel way is to use a website tour builder to point out the most important aspects of your site.

Easy as 1, 2, 3

Leading your guests through a guided tour of your site is far easier than you might think. Thanks to the WP Flat Tour Builder plugin. You’re really not going to find a more solid way to go step-by-step with your users. Within just a few clicks, you’ll be set up to, well, get them set up.

I should mention, however, that WP Flat Tour Builder is a premium plugin, and no, there’s not a free version. You can grab it for just $20, though. That’s a pretty small investment for a site that either needs to direct its users through a sales funnel or teach them a process.

Installation and Set Up

When you purchase the plugin, you’ll download a file called WP_Tour_Builder.zip. Premium plugins have to be installed manually since they’re not in the repo, so go to Plugins – Add New and select the .zip file on your computer.

Once you hit Install Now, you just activate it like you do any other plugin. Now you should have a sidebar item called Flat Tour Builder and its sub-menus.

The base plugin page may be a bit odd at first because you haven’t set up a tour yet. It wants you to choose your color palette for the tour. If you know what you want, feel free to do this now. If not, you can always come back and choose the right hues.

You may also set the fonts individually for the tours, but I personally prefer to have yes chosen for Use Theme Fonts (and for Use HTTPS for obvious reasons).

Creating Your Tour

Unfortunately, there is no Add New button in the sidebar. You have to create new tours through the Tours item in the dashboard sidebar.

Obviously, the most important options you’re going to deal with are going to be on the tour creation page. And boy, do you get a lot of them to root through.

In general, what you’re doing to set up the tour initially is pretty straightforward.

Title – The title will only be visible to you. Use this for your own organization.

Start Method – You can set it to start automatically on page load, or when a user clicks on an element.

Run Once? – Do you want the tour to run every time someone loads into the page, or only a single time?

Page URL – Set a single page for a tour. This is great for courses or maybe checkout pages. This option allows for page-specific instruction.

Activate on mobile? – Pretty straightforward. Does your tour fit a mobile user?

Activate on mobile only? – Or does your tour only make sense to mobile users?

The Other Two Options

The plugin also has two other options that I think deserve to be talked about separately: Roles allowed to see it? and On website or backend?

It will depend on who needs to see the tour as to what roles you choose. For instance, when everyone is chosen, it will appear to every single visitor who shows up, from search, referral, or direct access. If you choose subscriber, for instance, you may be limiting access to the tour because you’re leading a paid member through a process to use the product.

But why would you need to limit access to just admin or editor? And why would you need to show a tour on the back end of your website (the WP dashboard) instead of the front? Two words: client training (or staff training, maybe).

When you do design or development work, handing off a site to clients is sometimes…difficult. Training can take quite a long time, especially if they’re not used to WordPress or you’ve done any customization. Using a website tour builder on the backend of your website will be a hands-on way for them (and a hands-off way for you) to see what the best practices are for using their new site.

Or it could be a way to onboard new staff members on how you run things and what their new workflow is going to be. Or how to use a new feature you added. Whatever. There are tons of uses for a back-end website tour builder.

Creating the Tour Steps

Now that you have a tour made, you will see it in your overall list.

When you hover over the item, you will see the View Steps link. Since you haven’t created any steps yet, that will take you to an empty list. Click Add New to…well, you know.

You will have to enter each step of a tour individually because each step will lead or point to a different part of the site or require a different action. Within each one, you get to pick exactly how it behaves down to the element it’s attached to, timing before showing it, or even allowing the user to close it.

What you do with the steps is entirely up to you, but thee are three types that you can rotate between, entirely dependent on what you have to accomplish with that tour.

Tooltip

You will use a tooltip anytime you need to point out a particular element on the screen. Maybe a link or image. Good for a series of steps or making sure that a user knows where something important is.

Text

Text steps are great for introducing and ending tours, as well as providing information that your user absolutely must not miss.

Dialog

Dialog steps are pop ups that the user has to interact with. They continue or close or accept a term (or a condition!). You can use this to make sure that your user is aware that they are completing a purchase or cancelling an account. Or like the text steps, you may want to guarantee they saw some information and require them to take action to proceed.

Do You Need a Website Tour Builder?

Well, even if you didn’t think so before, I bet you’ve thought of a few ways to use a builder on your site. You can even have a single-step tour that directs your user to something you want them to see (maybe a quick note over the play button of your newest podcast episode).

Whatever your reason and however you want to use it, it’s no trouble at all to add a tour to pretty much any WordPress site.

WooCommerce is by far the biggest player in the WordPress ecommerce space. It has its own robust economy of premium add-ons both by its creators and an impressive array of third party developers. So much so that it can be easy to catch yourself thinking that every add-on worth having is premium. But like WooCommerce itself (and WordPress of course) quality/usefulness and a $0 price tag are not mutually exclusive. There are plenty of free WooCommerce plugins out there that can enhance your store without requiring you to spend a dime. In this post we’ve rounded up eleven we feel are worth checking out.

1. WooCommerce Multilingual

Off the bat, you should know that expanding the languages your store is available in can increase sales and conversions. The WPML project is fantastic for that, and this plugin will let you make sure that your site reaches absolutely as many people as possible. I think the best part of this plugin is that it not only shows the pages on your site in a new language, but also allows emails that you sent to your customers to be translated, too. That’s good stuff.

More Information

2. YITH WooCommerce Wishlist

You want people to come back to your site. While one-off sales are okay, the real money is with repeat customers. And what better way to get repeat customers than to give them a chance to browse your store and throw whatever they want to remember onto a wishlist? It works for Amazon, so it will work for you, too. Just install the YITH WooCommerce Wishlist plugin and before you know it, conversions and return visitors will be soaring. Plus, the image they use to promote the plugin uses an elegant black dress. I say their word choice is an omen.

More Information

3. WooRewards

If you’re like most shoppers, free stuff gets you to buy more than you’d normally buy. Just the prospect of it being free is too tantalizing to miss. Even more than that, the best way to give something for free is to make sure they keep coming back to your store over and over again. That’s why rewards programs are so popular. With the WooRewards plugin, you can host your own rewards program for free. Just like the wishlist above, if you can get people to come back for any reason, they will most likely buy more stuff. And with something free dangling like a carrot on a stick in front of them, too, it’s a one-two punch that’ll knock ’em out every time.

More Information

4. WooCommerce Direct Checkout

Remember how one of the most annoying parts of ecommerce is the abandoned cart? Well, that’s not an issue with WooCommerce Direct Checkout. Just install this baby on your site, and you won’t have any abandoned carts anymore. Zero. Zilch. Because you won’t have a cart at all. You can direct your customers directly to checkout with this plugin so that their impulse to buy is streamlined through the process perfectly. It’s totally free to use, but if you want a more robust experience, the developers have a pro upgrade you can opt for.

More Information

5. WooCommerce Menu Cart

Just like it says, this plugin puts a cart icon in the menu of your WordPress site. Some themes don’t play well with WooCommerce, but that shouldn’t be a problem with this one installed. Just activate it, and you have a customizable spot in your menu bar that lets your customers keep track of everything they’ve set aside to buy. And if you don’t want it just in the menu bar, you can use a shortcode to render the cart wherever you want — widgets, footers, blogs, anywhere.

6. WooCommerce Currency Switcher

If there is one lesson we can learn from the current state of the film industry, it’s that there’s a lot of money to be made outside of the United States. So make sure that your customers know what they’re really paying by using this plugin. When installed, this plugin lets your users see exchange rates for the price you’ve set and their desired currency. No more guessing how many Euros equal how many US Dollars, or how many Ruples equal how many GBP. The free version only supports 2 currencies, but that may be enough if you have a dominant country in addition to your native one.

7. WooCommerce PDF Invoices & Packing Slips

Running an ecommerce store is fun and games…until it’s not. The worst part about an online business (really, any business) is keeping up with all your paperwork. Thankfully, there is a slew of software out there to make it better for you, and this is one of the top options. With this free WooCommerce plugin, you can generate PDF invoices and packing slips (see why it’s named that now?) quickly and easily so your business keeps moving foward and doesn’t have to slow down while you push around a lot of paper.

8. Amazon Pay

PayPal and Stripe may be your go-to payment methods for WooCommerce, but you should absolutely think about Amazon Pay, too. Since roughly everyone in the world shops on Amazon, using this free, official extension will make your store run a bit more smoothly. It lets your users integrate with a payment processor that they are already comfortable with and trust, and you get the same benefits because you’re dealing with a gateway that’s based on one of the biggest infrastructures in the world. The only downside as I see to this (and this is a minor quibble) is that users can’t use rewards points or gift cards for purchases via Amazon Pay. As a consumer, that stinks, but as a vendor, it should be no different than taking PayPal or Stripe.

9. Woo Zoom

I don’t know what it is about image magnification, but there’s just something that screams a site is professional if you let users zoom in on your products. Installing this plugin makes it a breeze, and your shop will look a ton more professional immediately. You can upgrade to a pro version if you want more customization, but you probably won’t need to.

10. WooCommerce Gift Cards

Everyone loves gift cards. Whether they are getting free money to a favorite shop (yours, obviously) or picking out an easy present on the go that can be given immediately, people adore gift cards. If you have this plugin installed, your customers will have that option, and even if they don’t find the perfect gift for that special someone, that special someone can pick it out for themselves. The downside to the free version of this plugin is that while the gift cards are available to purchase on your site, you have to manually send the codes to the recipient. For smaller shops, that may be a good thing, as you have a bit more granular control, but for later sites, that just isn’t possible to keep up with. Other than that, it’s easy to use and set up, so you should definitely take a look.

More Information

11. Coupon Shortcodes + Coupon Countdown

To round it all out, let’s give your customers a reward for being so darn amazing. With the Coupon Shortcodes plugin, you can designate anywhere on your site as a location for your customers to get a code and apply it at checkout. While that’s awesome, it’s integration with Coupon Countdown is what really makes it cool — you can do a limited time offer for only specific parts of your site (maybe 404 pages or a sales page).

Finishing Up with Free WooCommerce Plugins

No matter what kind of store you run, there’s a handful of these free WooCommerce plugins that should probably be installed on your site. Sure, not everything will work for everyone, but even the ones with limited functionality can work as a demo to see if it’s the right fit for your store. Given that all these are free, installing some of them can only gain you sales, right? Happy selling!

Your SEO strategy is strong. But have you thought about honing in on your local community? With a focus on local SEO, you can benefit from both general internet searches as well as specialized traffic that will bring in local customers and foot traffic.

If you have a physical location, targeting locals can be even more important than general internet traffic. Because 46% of all Google searches are for local businesses, and 78% of those searches resulting in offline purchases.

Local SEO does need a slightly different strategy than traditional, organic SEO, but it’s nothing to be afraid of. We are going to walk you through the basics and then some advanced tactics so that you can convert those Yelp reviews and Facebook likes into dollars in your pocket.

Local SEO: The Basics

In case you weren’t aware, there are a few differences in local SEO and organic SEO. The primary one being that local SEO takes the business and searcher’s locations into consideration when ranking. Ranking for keywords is important (just as in traditional organic SEO) but you have to add in various geographical metrics to make sure you’re found by the people who want to walk directly into your space.

1. Content is Still King

Keyword stuffing is still your enemy. You don’t want to have copy on your site that sounds like a bad radio advertisement:“Come on down to Besties in Your Town, USA for the best deals Your Town has ever seen. Remember, if you need this product, drop on by Besties in downtown Your Town, USA today.”

People cringe at reading stuff like that, and Google knows what you’re doing. You don’t necessarily have to blog to create content. That’s a misunderstanding about what web content is. You will want in-depth, well-written, SEO-optimized copy. It should go into pretty specific detail about what services you offer, for whom they are offered, and why you’re the best choice for the customer.

Tailor your landing pages, product pages, and about pages specifically to your ideal, local customer. Show them that you’re a part of the community. Doing so will build goodwill as well as show that you’re the choice they should make.

And if you do want to blog, feel free. You can write a ton about your community and general area. Which only boosts your ranking. Your business enriches the community and your content can provide the same kind of enrichment. You can highlight customers and community members, look at events going on in your area, or even discuss local history as it pertains to your business. Regardless, blogging doesn’t have to be on your content schedule. But if it is, you’ll see a benefit if you keep at it.

2. City Names and Neighborhoods Reign Supreme

Most of the time when people search for something near them they use the name of their neighborhood, city, region, etc. You absolutely want to use these as keywords on your site.

Sure, your business niche keywords are important. If you’re a plumber, you want to go into what services people in your area will be searching for. But just as important, you want to make sure that you target very specific parts of your city where you will be providing those services.

You might be based in Minneapolis-St. Paul, but you may be more local to the Maple Grove suburb and driving across the Twin Cities may not be worth the business. So you will want to make sure you target Maple Grove, MN more than the greater metro area.

Nicknames are just as important in SEO as actual city names. The city I live in is Florence, Alabama. However, the locals more often refer to the general area of the 4 closest towns as The Shoals. So while businesses local to me do list whether they are in Florence, Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia, or Sheffield, they tend to mainly focus their efforts on the phrase/keyword The Shoals or just Shoals.

We will go into greater depth as to how you can do this later on, but keeping those names in your URLs, headings (especially H1s), blog post titles (and tags and categories, too), image alt tags, page copy, and general website title (or at least the SEO title that you set through plugins like Yoast).

If potential customers are searching for a local business and they have several choices, but one of those choices has several pages that refer to a more specific location they are looking for, that’s the site they’re more likely to visit. Even if that page isn’t necessarily ranked #1.

3. Make Connections with Other Local Businesses

Your goal should be providing the best content you can for your target customers. And sometimes, that means pointing them into a direction of a business that may not be yours. You provide your services, and what some customers need just won’t fall within those boundaries. I would be willing to bet, however, there is another business in your area that could handle their request. And chances are, you know the folks who run that business personally.

Speak with them about their own web presence. You can easily come to agreements to include links to them on your site (and vice versa) — which are great because they’re generally incredibly high quality. You can work with each other for deals and such that are cross-promoted. That way, both businesses will benefit from real-life people who are potential customers.

By partnering up with other local businesses, social networks also open up to you, with more opportunities for commercial growth via YouTube and Facebook search. While these are not as popular as Google in terms of general search, folks look for recommendations for local businesses frequently on Facebook. The more times your business is mentioned, the more you will show up in results and recommendations.

If any of your local businesses run blogs on their site, consider asking them if you can toss a post or two up there. You can generally get a new backlink, reach a new audience, and promote goodwill among your community. Guest blogging may seem like a relic of 2008, but it’s not. If your focus is local SEO, guest blogging is as relevant as ever.

4. Design for Mobile

Everyone is telling us to focus on mobile-first design. That’s never been more important than when focusing on local SEO because 89% of people search for something local on their cellphone at least once a week. Those mobile searchers are also 16% more likely to travel to your physical location within 1 day than desktop-based users. Even more useful than that, 18% of all mobile, local searches result in sales within 1 day. That’s a lot of revenue you don’t want to leave unaccounted for.

To specifically cater to this demographic, there are a few guidelines you should keep in mind specifically for local SEO that may not seem as important for general mobile design.

First, you want to make sure that your business name, address, and phone number (also known as a NAP or citation) are on your home page, prominent, readable, and (most importantly) clickable. 68% of visitors will either click the phone number to call you or click the address to open up directions to your location. Keep in mind, however, that you will want this NAP to be consistent everywhere — so as you set up your Google My Business page, Yelp, TripAdvisor, and so on, keep the same formatting and information. Otherwise, it confuses both the algorithms and users.

While it has nothing to do with SEO itself, integrating a live chat feature, such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, can increase conversions, too. People are used to messaging on mobile devices. It’s a natural extension to reach out to you directly.

Local SEO: Advanced Tactics and Specifics

As you’ve seen above, the basics of local SEO are similar to traditional strategies, but just different enough to warrant special attention. However, if you want to move beyond those foundational tips and truly rank in your local searches, you’re going to need to apply some specific tactics. These can take a while to get in place, but if you’re willing to put in the elbow grease to get them working, they’ll serve you well for a long time.

1. Claim Your Google My Business Page

Outside of having a website of your own, the single most important thing you need to succeed at local SEO is a Google My Business (or GMB) page. Essentially, this is what people see when they search Google for anything remotely related to your business

You will have reviews, location, maps, questions, website links, phone numbers, etc. on the page. The ultimate NAP, really. Additionally, this information is aggregated by Google automatically, but you can take an extra step. I have highlighted the “Own This Business?” link in the image above. You can get much more out of your GMB page by claiming ownership of it, you basically get to post directly to Google as though it were your own blog. That’s awesome.

Once you’ve verified ownership of your business, start customizing the GMB page using the same strategies as above.

2. Leverage Review Sites

Similarly to GMB, review sites like Yelp, TripAdvisor, Airbnb, YP.com, Facebook, and so many more are paramount to your local SEO efforts. If you haven’t claimed these business pages, go to the sites and grab them. You get many of the same benefits as you do with GMB — the customization for keywords, URLs, and the domain authority from links make this worth your time.

Additionally, you can use a plugin like WP Business Reviews to aggregate and grab multiple reviews that you want to highlight as testimonials on your site. Because Google loves testimonials for local SEO. They’re a trust signal that indicates to both the algorithms and people that you do what you say you do.

3. Utilize Facebook Groups

This one is quick and easy. If you keep up with your Facebook page as a local business (and you should because of the number of searches that can direct to you), a good habit to get into is posting in your local buy, sell, trade groups. Make checking these groups a regular part of your social strategy. Don’t spam them, obviously, but these are generally public groups that show up in searches, and depending on your area, can be incredibly active with hundreds of posts per day and thousands of users. That’s a lot of traffic for your menu or new products or anything else that you post.

Just make sure to follow any and all group guidelines so you don’t get blacklisted or worse…a bad reputation.

Finding these groups is pretty straightforward. Simply searching (inside Facebook) for MyCityName buy sell trade will likely bring many of them up. For my local area, the term sale barn is popular for groups, and other keywords like swap and marketplace and bazaar tend to work their way into titles.

You can also use this strategy to post items for sale in the official Facebook Marketplace (it’s in the main toolbar of the mobile app). Do this sparingly, but as you post items or services within your business niche, many people who searched for similar things in the past will get notifications of your new post.

4. Get Listed in Local and Niche Directories

Your local Chamber of Commerce probably has a directory of local businesses that are members. Those are links with good domain authority (probably) and generally decent traffic. You may have a state-wide directory like Alabama does through AL.com. Note that our local Chamber of Commerce shows up.

(When I was working on a book festival a few years ago, I found a niche directory made up of local festivals of all kinds in Alabama. Multiple people told me they found us through it, too. That impressed on me how useful those tools can be!)

These kinds of directories are great because they tend to target the exact demographics that you do. So take the time, search them out, and get a few links back to your site. Just make sure that you’re submitting to reputable sites. Not every directory is worth having a link from, but many are. Not only will you show up in their interior searches, but your individual page will come up in results and give people your NAP.

Moz has a good overview of how to vet the local business directories you come across. It’s a good read, like pretty much everything from Moz.

5. Make Sure Your Schema is Right

Schema.org does a lot of good for websites. Many SEO plugins like Yoast already optimize your site’s schema to talk to the search engines correctly. But you will want to make sure that your own website’s schema is also optimized with the local business markup that Schema.org lists. When you look through that list, you might be overwhelmed. I kind of am, so don’t feel bad. That’s why there are tons of schema plugins out there like Structured Data Schema or WPSSO that let you customize exactly how you want your data to appear.

6. Use Moz Local

This one may not be for everyone, as Moz Local is a paid tool that can come with a hefty price tag (from $99 to $249 per year). But if you can afford it and really want to take your local SEO game to the next level, check out the small business tool. You won’t be disappointed.

Moz is my personal favorite of all the SERP and SEM tools online, and with Moz Local, it’s drilling down another level. You get rankings and analytics of much of the stuff we talked about in this article already, and you don’t have to do the legwork yourself.

For a lot of people, that will be worth the price of admission. For others, maybe not. Regardless, the tool is pretty nifty and worth at least a cursory glance.

Final Thoughts

Local SEO is not necessary for everyone. If you don’t need local traffic and do most of your business online to audiences abroad, you should absolutely stick to worrying about traditional SEO tactics. But if you do have a physical location that makes up for a sizable portion (or really any portion) of your business done, you should focus on local SEO.

They say that word-of-mouth is the best advertising, and these days, word-of-mouth seems to happen on Yelp and Facebook and Google more often than in person. So do an audit of your site, traditional SEO strategies, and current local SEO strategies. Then you can start from the top of this post, work your way down, and watch those numbers in your ledger rise.

What is your strategy for standing out with local SEO?

Press play, and it…plays. But you may need something a little more robust than that. Something with a little more flair and a lot more features. If that’s the case, pick your favorite WordPress audio player plugin and listen until your ears ring.

1. Smart Podcast Player

I have to mention the Smart Podcast Player. If you’re in the market for a premium player that your users will actually enjoy using, SPP is it. Designed for podcasts (obviously), this WordPress audio player plugin is a high-end product. They can easily binge your entire library, and the Smart Track Player takes that same functionality for an entire show and gives it to a single track. That way you can use it for music or podcasts or even just snippets for your audience to download on a one-off basis. You can even capture listeners’ email addresses through it for your mailing list and marketing! And at $8 per month, it’s pretty affordable.

More Information

2. Blubrry PowerPress

PowerPress is a great player. PowerPress is completely free and easy to use, and we did a total write up on how to set up using it to host your podcast using WordPress. That said, as fantastic of a player for podcasts as it is, it can also work for other media that you want to display as well. While it’s not as slick as the SPP (honestly, very few are), PowerPress is feature-rich and more than capable of holding its own with any premium WordPress audio player plugin out there. If you need people to listen, install Blubrry and just…PowerPress play.

3. Amazon Polly for WordPress

You want to make your website as accessible as possible, right? Well, text-to-speech is an amazing way to do that — your readers can just hit play and have the whole post read to them. The downside is that you have to take the time to record that audio, edit it, and make it shine. The upside to that downside is that you now have access to Amazon Polly, which will do that work for you. On top of a great vocabulary recognition, Amazon has also built-in support for Amazon Translate, so you can provide multilingual options for visitors, too.

More Information

4. Compact WP Audio Player

The Compact WP Audio Player is simple and easy. If you just need to display any kind of audio on your site for any reason, just throw in a shortcode, and you’re ready to go. You have multiple ways of styling the player, and there’s complete documentation for that here.

More Information

5. Music Player for WooCommerce

While free music is fine and dandy, and we all love it, you have to get paid. The starving artist gig is wonderful in theory, but the reality is much, much worse. You know…the whole starving part. So when you use this WordPress audio player plugin, you can sell your music or podcasts or whatever else and put food in your mouth and make the starving part hit the road. When you protect your audio, you allow the customer to sample the file, and the plugin automatically truncates the audio for you. iTunes and most other marketplaces do something similar. You can place the player in a lot of different places throughout your WooCommerce pages using a shortcode, so you have total flexibility of how you want to present your merchandise. So instead of using an extra platform to sell your audio, you can finally use the one you already know.

More Information

6. MP3 Music Player by Sonaar

This is one pretty WordPress audio player plugin if I do say so myself. You see the waveforms as you listen, and the options inside let you change the color palette of the player. You can either display a playlist or a single track, which is fantastic for both podcasters and musicians alike. Use this to spruce up your posts by adding audio commentary to special ones, or you can just include a waveform that is aesthetically pleasing and makes their experience a little nicer (maybe in a fixed, floating iframe that moves along with their scrolling – not included in the plugin, just an idea).

More Information

7. Audio Album

Not to be outdone by the competition, Audio Album comes in as a contender for the title of prettiest WordPress audio plugin, too. More than some of the plugins listed above it, Audio Album has a slew of customization options that you can designate on the shortcode level. If you want to add an artist name or album title, you can. If you want the player to be a certain size or style, you can do that, too. On top of that, when you go into the theme customizer, you can adjust the styling the same as you can anything else in your theme. It’s very intuitive and easy to use, far more than many proprietary customizations that come with many plugins.

More Information

8. HTML5 jQuery Audio Player

Another slick-looking player with a very technical name is the HTML5 jQuery Audio Player. What sets this one apart from its peers is that you can set a price within the plugin itself and sell your stuff directly using Easy Digital Downloads. There used to be a pro version that lets you access widgetized areas with your player and have multiple playlists, but the developer has decided to integrate many of those pro features into the free version, so in the coming months, this WordPress audio player plugin should become even more powerful for free.

More Information

9. Sticky Audio Player

You can pay $27 on Codecanyon for this great option. This one works well, is smooth and fast, and you can pull your media from roughly anywhere you host. Soundcloud, various podcast hosts, self-hosted media servers, wherever. Another great feature is that you can play across multiple pages as users navigate your site, or you can offer the option to launch in a pop-up window so that even when those people leave your site, they can still listen to your content. It’s a fantastic way to keep users engaged with your content.

More Information

10. WavePlayer

As of this writing, WavePlayer is the #1 rated WordPress audio player plugin on Codecanyon. There’s a reason, too. It’s good. Really good. You can have people download your audio, select what your optimum loading style will be for your site, and so much more. You will basically never run out of options to tweak, and the player itself is beautiful, too. It will display a colorful waveform of the audio to show progression through the track, and maybe the best part is that you can use product_id and product_url in the player itself to point people at the product page to purchase the track. So once again, you can invest $26 to prevent yourself from becoming a starving artist.

More Information

11. tPlayer

Unlimited playlist. Unlimited tracks. And unlimited tracks on those unlimited playlists. Sound good? Then take a look at tPlayer. Not only do you get the limitless options, but you also have 10 templates, style customization, an automated Top 10 Songs of the Week playlist that you don’t have to curate yourself, and a radio mode where you can stream your music or other audio posts. For $25, you get a whole lot of functionality. The value is definitely worth checking out.

More Information

12. ZoomSounds

Zooming in to the final spot on our list, but definitely not last place, ZoomSounds can replace your default WordPress audio player with some super cool options. It looks similar to the SoundCloud player, and whether that’s a good thing is up to your own tastes. It looks sleek and is the #1 selling WordPress audio player plugin. So that counts for something, I think. The plugin is mobile optimized, offers a great number of customizations and CSS elements (you can even replace the entire player with a custom CSS skin if you want), and if you don’t like messing with optimizing file formats, you’re in luck: ZoomSounds uses MP3s. And only MP3s.

More Information

Listen Up!

Whether you are looking for a premium option or a free WordPress audio player plugin, you can’t really make a bad choice. If you’re having a hard time deciding, take a look at the dozen players above and play eeny, meany, miny, mo, and no matter which player you land on, you’re going to be happy.
